A Parent's Prayer (free download from Art Scroll)

All parents want the best for their children — that they should be good and upright, that they have everything they need for a fruitful, joyous life.

The classic work, Shelah HaKadosh, contains a prayer that parents should recite for their children at any time of the year — but especially before Rosh Chodesh Sivan, (which is Sunday, May 24th) for that is the month when G-d gave us the Torah, and when the Jewish people began to be called His Children. This year it is preferable to recite it on Thursday. It may also be recited on Friday.

AS A PUBLIC SERVICE, Art Scroll is OFFERing THE TEXT OF THE PRAYER FOR DOWNLOADING. Click HERE to download.

If you have problems downloading these files directly from this page, you can also have these files emailed to you by sending a blank email to parentsprayer@artscroll.com and the free file will automatically be emailed back to your email address. Do not include a message, as the return email is automatic and no messages will be read.

Jewish Economics Survey

The purpose of the survey is touched on in the introduction; essentially its purpose is to gather data to gauge the approximate cost of living over different demographics across different frum communities, while it has simultaneously allowed those who've taken it to gain a better understanding of their own personal spending habits and finances. It also asks people to assess and give their opinions on the state of the frum community's finances and what problems exists and what advice they would give to young people starting out.

The results so far have been really interesting and extremely enlightening, and there's further discussion available on my blog, SerandEz, here.

The link to the survey is http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=p-2WPRCDbkfzWDcHNWxlhdQ or, if you prefer a shorter URL, http://tinyurl.com/dl4gxe.

In addition, I'll be giving the first public presentation on the survey this Wednesday, May 6th at 8:00 PM at the Mt. Sinai Jewish Center in Washington Heights. The title is "Playing - and Praying - in the Black, But Living in the RED". Admission is free. There might even be refreshments. :)

Thanks so much for your time!

Guard your tongue and help Jewish singles

It is now easier than ever to learn the laws of forbidden speech and receive encouragement to refrain from speaking it. All you need to do is go to segulah4singles.com and click on the "join today" button. Upon signing up you will receive an email every day (except Shabbos) containing a brief lesson in a very readable format.

The learning is done as a merit for Jewish singles across the world. You can also have yourself in mind or a loved one. Many people who have signed on have reported back that they or their loved one found their shidduch shortly after.

You have nothing to loose and everything to gain. You can become a better person and help your fellow Jew. Why not give it a try? Their are currently over 1100 signed on. The larger the group the greater the merit. Let's make a difference for ourselves and our single Jewish brothers and sisters. It really helps!

Following is a statement issued by the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of America concerning the current situation in Eretz Yisroel. May we hear only good news in coming days.

ROUGH TRANSLATION

To all dear Jews concerned about their fellow-Jews in this time of distress:

In light of the current situation, in which thousands of Jews in the Holy Land are in danger due to the attacks of the enemy, we regard it as proper to strongly emphasize the obligation on us all to awaken ourselves in prayer, to ask for Divine mercy for our dear brethren and to increase our charity and good deeds for the protection of the remnant of Yisroel from any and all harm. We should intensify the practice of reciting chapters 83, 130 and 142 of Tehillim each day, and fervently pour out our hearts in the prayer "V'hu Rachum" said on Monday and Thursday mornings and in the blessing of "Hashkiveinu" in Ma'ariv, where we ask Hashem to "spread upon us Your tent of peace" and conclude "the Guardian of His nation Yisroel forever."

May Hashem in His abundant mercy and kindness shield His nation and heritage, release them from all straits, and take us from darkness to light and from subjugation to redemption. Amein, may it be His will.

shloshim of kedoshei Mumbai

Friends of Agudath Israel:

Today, 4 Teves, marks the shloshim of the kedoshim who were slaughtered last month al kiddush Hashem in the Chabad House in Mumbai, India. The names of these kedoshim, Hashem yinkom damam, are as follows:

Gavriel Noach ben Nachman
Rivka bas Shimon
Aryeh Leibish ben Nochum Efraim
Ben Tzion ben Chaim Dov
Nechamabas Yaakov Eliyahu
Yocheved bas Avrohom

An ish chashuv from our community who is well known to us (but who wishes to remain anonymous) has undertaken a campaign, with the blessings and support of Gedolei Yisroel, to promote a Klal Yisroel-wide commemoration of the Kedoshei Mumbai on this day of their shloshim through the saying of Tehilim and/or the learning of Mishnayos in their memory. The increased Torah and Tefilah will surely be a great merit l'iluy nishmasam, as will the sense of achdus that will result from such a Klal Yisroel-wide undertaking. May it be a z'chus as well for our brethren in Eretz Yisroel during this most difficult time, and for Acheinu Kol Beis Yisroel hanesunim b'tzorah u'v'shivya wherever they may be.
